Workshop on Benefits of Competition in the Mid-Atlantic (PJM) Region

Demonstrating the Economic Benefits of Electric Industry Restructuring in the PJM Region as an Applicable Model for Competitive Markets

Nov. 13—Washington, D.C.

In response to input since the issuance of Estimating the Benefits From Restructuring Electricity Markets: An Application to the PJM Region, CAEM’s groundbreaking study quantifying the benefits of competition in the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland Regional Transmission Organization, CAEM invites you to a unique, interactive workshop on the benefits of competition in the mid-Atlantic and its applicability as a model for other markets.

Background

Market advocates argue that competition in energy markets would result in cost savings for consumers. However, analysis of those benefits has largely been non-existent, a fact that puts market supporters on the defensive in attacks by critics. A recent study sponsored by the Center for the Advancement of Energy Markets (CAEM) intends to change that with a detailed qualitative and quantifiable analysis of the benefits of competition.

The results of that study, released on September 23, 2003, conclude that consumers in the Mid-Atlantic region received benefits of over $3 billon in total savings in 2002 and that future savings from existing restructuring will total over $28 billion.

Agenda

The workshop will be highly interactive. Sessions will begin with brief presentations that will provoke discussion and answer questions.
